The Hyundai Fuel Reimbursement Program

I suppose we've always known that achieving a vehicle's fuel ratings is determinant on many factors that make it extremely difficult to ever truly achieve in the real world.  Weather conditions, a heavy foot (like mine), speed variations, etc., all play a pivotal role in how one can get the most out of their fuel tank in one fill.  With this being said, we have all learned to adjust our expectations and try to achieve the best fuel efficiency we can!

Hyundai has always been and in fact was one of the first auto companies to make fuel efficiency for their vehicle line up one of THE most crucial aspects to their build.  In past years, and with exponentially rising fuel costs, people have become much more diligent about selecting the vehicles they drive and how much fuel they are willing to burn for financial and environmental reasons.  With newly styled vehicles designs AND impressive fuel ratings for all models within the lineup, Hyundai sales have been booming.

Not too long ago the fuel economy of the Hyundai product was being questioned and scrutinized.  Hyundai took an initiative and released a statement to their customers and the general public before the news giants got a hold of the story and skewed any information.  The proactive approach was the best route to take in order to maintain the brand integrity Hyundai has worked so hard to achieve.

As of November 2nd, Hyundai Auto Canada Corp. announced that they have corrected the fuel consumption ratings for approximately 172,000 vehicles sold between 2010-2012.  Consumers were realizing that the fuel ratings that they had been told their vehicles could achieve were not matching the "real" fuel ratings they were getting.  As concerns poured in, Hyundai responded accordingly and immediately.

The fuel consumption rating discrepancies were realized as the result of procedural errors during a process called "coast down" testing at the company's testing facilities in Korea. Coast down testing simulates aerodynamic tire rolling resistance and drive train frictional losses and provides the technical data used to program the test dynamo meters that generate fuel consumption ratings. Because of this, Hyundai has introduced the "Hyundai Reimbursement Program" that will compensate current and former Hyundai owners whose particular vehicles have been tagged as having misrepresenting fuel ratings.

You can log onto www.hyundaifuelconsumption.ca to see if your vehicle qualifies. The comprehensive reimbursement program is for affected current and former vehicle owners to cover additional fuel costs associated with the fuel consumption rating change. Customers will receive a personalized, pre-paid credit card with a selected amount.

There have been mixed reactions and reviews regarding this situation in its entirety.  Some feel that ratings should have been correct from the beginning.  I myself own a 2012 Veloster and it happens to be one of the vehicles that had incorrect fuel ratings, and will be compensated.  I suppose it would have been ideal that all had been copacetic in the fuel ratings, however, for all of the mishaps that have happened in the auto industry involving faulty product and substandard quality, I think it was pretty commendable that Hyundai stepped up first and openly admitted faults in their fuel declarations. They could have admitted guilt and carried on, however, there was responsibility taken and then a decision to monetarily make up for the error to all the customers that were affected. At the end of the day I can accept a small deficiency in fuel ratings that has been recognized and dealt with.  I'd rather that, than my brakes being recalled.

A September Saturday with Habitat for Humanity

We could not have asked for a better day!
This past Saturday, September 22nd, the Murray Hyundai team along with the Murray Chev/Hummer team united to become builders in the Fall Build for Habitat For Humanity on Fernbank Crescent.

The wind was mild and the temperature was perfect for constructing walls and hammering nails! It seriously warmed my heart to be a part of this experience as it did our gracious team. I'd like to thank everyone who helped our team build and show us the ropes; without you, none of this would even be possible.

When considering ways to give back, I highly recommend considering Habitat for Humanity as a medium for your efforts. Our experience with the organization was fantastic and it allowed us to get active while also supporting the community. I will definitely be putting more of my efforts towards this cause and making sure that I can contribute to putting more roofs over the heads of community members. It definitely helps that I love using a staple gun, haha!

The positivity from Saturday was phenomenal and numerous team members are looking forward to their next opportunity to build.
Thanks to everyone from Team Murray

Thanks again to Habitat For Humanity Winnipeg for such a fulfilling day!

The New 2013 Elantra GT now at Murray Hyundai

Hyundai continues to do exciting things with their vehicle line up including phasing out the Elantra Touring wagon for the newly evolved, stylized and excetionally built, 2013 Elantra GT.  It seems that Hyundai is still shall I say "killing it".

Since the 2013 Elantra GT hit the lot at Murray Hyundai, there has been much buzz over the vehicle and surprisingly enough the demographic has been difficult to gauge. It seems to be appealing to drivers young and old, male and female. This isn't that shocking considering that the all new 2013 Elantra GT brings five-door functionality and European-inspired driving dynamics to the ever-expanding and award-winning Elantra line up.

*Remember* the 2012 Elantra Sedan was named both North American Car of the Year and Canadian Car of the Year! On. Fire.

Standard features include unwavering, unsurpassed fuel efficiency, great performance, driver knee airbags, driver selectable steering, cooled glove box, heated front seats, Bluetooth and more. It is competively priced at starting at $19,149.

Other features in higher models include, XM radio, dual temperature control, Navigation, Backup camera and much more..

Back in August, I had the great fortune to accompany the very talented, highly engaging crew from Cruise Media Group to shoot a video promoting and showcasing the Elantra GT.  They once again did a fabulous job!  We'll be featuring it on our YouTube channel, website, Facebook and Twitter for all you to see!  We would love to hear what you think....and better yet, we'd love for you to come down to Murray Hyundai and give the 2013 Elantra GT a whirl!

The 2013 Santa Fe - It's Almost Here

We're extremely excited to announce that Murray Hyundai is now accepting pre-orders on the 2013 Santa Fe. We got our first look at it last week in Winnipeg and expect to receive the first round of vehicles to arrive in late August. We've shared some of our initial impressions below.

The 2013 Santa Fe comes in two sizes, the standard 7-seat Santa Fe, and the 5-seat Santa Fe Sport. The two models feature a different trim and entertain some impressive features that will inspire interest amongst customers. The 5-seat Sport model will be available in Fall 2012, while the 7-seat, long wheel base model will ship in early 2013.

Some of the new features that have come into play are a heated steering wheel and cooled seats as well as the standard heated seats. The Sport model will come equipped with the full Trailer Tow Package which has never happened before; this has traditionally existed as an additional accessory only.

Select models also include:
  • Sliding second-row seating
  • Heated rear seats and
  • A 4.3" display screen

While other vehicles in this class also share these features, Hyundai has been able to offer these additional perks while maintaining the same price point as the 2012 Santa Fe. In that way, all this luxury is considered accoutrement that Hyundai is offering is at a remarkably reasonable price. While final pricing has not yet been confirmed, the 'base model to top end' will range somewhere between $25,000 - $39,000.

The 2013 Santa Fe will no longer feature a standard transmission option, and Hyundai has opted out on the V6 Engine completely. Consumers will be thrilled to experience the new 2.4L and Turbo versions.  The 2.4 still possesses a great amount of horsepower so that drivers won't feel a sense of compromise on performance based on the smaller engine size. Nevertheless, those who want to push for speed and endurance will be attracted to the eco friendly 2.0L Turbo engine option, a confident step forward from the V6.

Our sales team agrees, the Santa Fe has clearly shone as THE vehicle that has emerged as the most recognizable and synonymous with Hyundai as a brand. We've been waiting 5 years for this fantastic  redux on an already celebrated model. We look forward to seeing them all over Winnipeg roads in the coming months!

How do you say "Hyundai" ?

Murray Hyundai hits the streets!
I've worked with Hyundai for over two years now and have had the opportunity to learn many aspects of the business from a variety of knowledgeable individuals. Unfortunately, there seems to be one issue on which employees and customers often disagree. The pronunciation of "Hyundai"!

Clearly it's the "Y" that causes the confusion. This hybrid consonant/vowel has resulted in many creative pronunciations; here are the most common ones:

Hun-day          :   The 'proper' way
Hi - un - day    :   Pronounced like the well-known downtown "Hy's Steakhouse"
He - un - day   :   Likely a throwback to the fictional cartoon hero "He-Man".
Hoo - un - day :   Inspired by the popular track from The Who - Who are you?"
Hon - day        :   A combination of Honda and Hyundai?

When I first began at the dealership, I was told that:
"Hyundai" rhymes with "Sunday"
As it turns out, that linguistic trick has stuck with me.

Last week I thought up a fun idea of hitting the streets of Winnipeg to ask others how they pronounce Hyundai. A quick call to the team at Cruise Media and I soon had a camera and microphone to document this project.

We are currently preparing the clips and planning to gathering some more footage of people saying "Hyundai". If we happen to bump into you, don't be shy - just tell us how you say Hyundai!
